Patient Information

Your GP or Optician may have referred you for further investigations or treatment and advised you that your referral has been sent to the Gateway (also referred to as the CAS). In order to organise the most appropriate treatment for you there is a requirement to transfer sensitive and/or confidential information between organisations involved in your care.  Please be assured that the information is accessible only to those trained and authorised to use it and that any data held and transmitted follows Safe Haven Procedures

What Is The Gateway?

The Gateway is a service that has been set up by Newark & Sherwood and Mansfield & Ashfield NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups to ensure you are given the most appropriate appointment.

Why Is My Referral Going Through the Gateway?

To ensure you receive the most appropriate treatment for your condition a team of specially trained Patient Care Advisors (PCAs) based in the Gateway will assess the most suitable service for you to attend. For certain conditions, doctors or specialists may also assess your referral, and based on its content, will advise the PCAs on the most suitable service for you. This is called triage. Not all conditions need to be seen in a hospital, and you may be offered an appointment in a community clinic.

What Happens Once My Referral Has Been Received?

After your referral has been assessed and/or received back from triage, a PCA will contact you to offer you a choice of hospital/community clinic to attend for assessment/treatment. In most cases, they will be able to offer you an appointment date and time.

How will The Gateway Contact Me?

The Gateway PCA will try to contact you on a number of occasions via telephone (x 3 different days/times), text and finally letter (asking you to contact us); therefore it is very important that your contact details are kept up to date with your GP/Dental or Opticians practice. Please note due to NHS confidentiality rules, the Gateway will not leave messages and calls will appear on your mobile from an ‘unknown’ number.

Unfortunately should the Gateway be unable to contact you, your referral will be returned to your GP/Dentist/Optician unless it was of an urgent nature (GP referrals only) in which case the 1st available appointment will be booked and sent to you via post. You will have the opportunity to change this if not suitable. If you haven’t heard from The Gateway within 10 working days of visiting your GP/Dentist/Optician, please ring the relevant number below.

What is Patient Choice?

In most cases, if you need to receive specialist treatment you have a right to choose when and where you are treated. A Patient Care Advisor from The Gateway will be able to discuss the options available for you and help you access the information to make an informed choice. Alternatively, you can discuss this with your GP/Dentist/Optician or a member of the practice staff.
