Protected Learning Time

CHEC has been organising Protected Learning Time on behalf of local CCGs (and their predecessors) within Nottinghamshire since 2006. This involves the following:

  • Organising an annual rolling programme of monthly afternoon educational sessions for clinical and non-clinical staff
  • Liaising with Out of Hours providers to ensure cover is available to enable the practices to close for this training
  • Liaising with all stakeholders (commissioners, providers, practices) to ensure the education is relevant and of high quality
  • Booking all speakers and equipment required
  • Securing suitable venues conducive to education
  • Monitoring and reporting on outcomes

Protected learning time is an established mechanism which can:

  • Facilitate CCGs in consulting its general practices and informing them of changes in service pathways
  • Facilitate CCGs in changing service delivery in primary care in order to increase value for money from NHS provision
  • Ensuring that local GPs are keeping up to date clinically and in service delivery; and are therefore prepared for successful revalidation
  • Facilitate sessions for non-clinical staff to ensure they are adequately trained to meet CQC registration.

The PLT programme is currently supported within Nottingham West and Newark and Sherwood CCGs by pharmaceutical sponsorship.
